Z is for Zinc – And Other Micronutrient Minerals That Matter
Zinc, along with other trace minerals like selenium, copper, manganese, boron and iodine, is essential for hundreds of biological processes. Zinc, in particular, is critical for immune function, wound healing, hormone balance, and even taste perception.
The first nutrition-related research that I did as a pediatric resident was to discover the amount of zinc and copper needed to supply to very tiny preemies being fed intravenously, in order to prevent severe sometimes fatal, zinc deficiency disease. My passion for micronutrient nutrition science began then and continued for 3 decades throughout my medical career. Now my focus is on healthy aging and healthspan, and the need to supply the entire micronutrient “orchestra” for optimal metabolic support, as we age.
With aging, absorption of minerals can decline. But modern farming also depletes soil nutrient levels—so even a “healthy” diet might not supply enough nutrients. Deficiencies in trace elements can show up in many ways such as fatigue, poor immunity, thyroid issues, or slow healing. These minerals may be “trace,” ie. needed in minute amounts, but their impact is huge.
3 Easy Action Steps:
- Eat mineral-rich foods. Shellfish, seeds, nuts, eggs, and seaweed are great sources of various trace elements.
- Eat a variety of foods. Different plants draw different minerals from their growing environment.
- Get tested to determine if you lack key minerals or trace elements. A simple panel can show if you’re low on essentials like zinc or iodine.
