As we think about how we age, it is important to remember that although we  inherit our genetic blueprint from our parents, many of the choices we make in daily life can modulate expression of our genes. So that  in effect, over time we construct the person that we become.

In my book Growing Older Living Younger: The Science of Aging Gracefully and the Art of Retiring Comfortably, I describe the personal roadmap I created for aging well,  based on 7 Foundational Pillars.

In this episode I introduce the fifth foundational pillar.  I call Pillar 5 ‘Connection’.

Reflecting on living alone, loneliness and the potential adverse consequences for mental and physical health, I was grateful that I had prepared myself to avoid the dangers of isolation. But more than 4 million Canadians and almost 36 million Americans were living alone half a decade ago. These numbers have surely increased. The impact, particularly on older solo dwellers, of the quarantine and isolating restrictions of the past two years, has been devastating. How has the pandemic affected you?
